Uncharted Territory

🔴 Guest Post: Rex Yau

I’ve been photographing my entire life, but I don’t know what a rangefinder is. 2023 changes all that, and how I perceive photography. My name is Rex.

Monica at the Louvre

Who is Rex?

I grew up in Hong Kong in the 1990s, surrounded by camera shops, and photography has always been a part of my life.

Now, as a transplant living in the mid-Atlantic of the United States. I worked as a full-time commercial cinematographer. However, when I am not filming, I often collaborate with models for portraits.

My journey to Leica?

While Leica was always a name I knew growing up, I had never seriously looked into what that name really meant. I was very comfortable with my Canon cameras from the analogue age onward. When I transitioned to digital, I stayed with the brand to minimise reinvestment, since I had invested in flagship lenses early on.

After 15 years of photographing digitally, my 2020 hobby was getting back into analogue photography. That sparked my curiosity to explore other camera platforms beyond Canon. Rangefinders sparked my interest due to their compact form factor. As soon as I put my eye through the viewfinder, pushing the focusing tab of an entry-level Minolta, I was hocked.

I spent weeks watching Matt’s video and sniffing through his Patreon community as I patiently shopped on eBay. In May of 2022, I finally found a Leica M3 double stroke that is in dire need of CLA and repair for a good deal.

With the camera away for repair, I asked myself, why stop there? So I quickly began a search for a digital Leica. At first, I was about to commit to a Leica M8, but again, my patience paid off, and I found a local listing of a Leica M240 for just $2000 USD!

Leica Selfie

Why Leica?

Having a digital M body was the most significant paradigm shift in my photography since I purchased my Canon 5D mk ii in 2011. It changes how I perceive photography entirely.

The mechanical nature of the M platform invites me to use the camera more than any other camera that I have ever owned. It’s like a spell that one simply cannot walk away from.

The tactile feel of a manual focus lens with a robust focusing tab connects its user to the scene more than a microprocessor-driven servo. The beautiful range finder that lets you experience the world without a computer interpolating it.

What Do You Photograph and Why?

Many people often ask me that question. It took me a while to figure out why I have been doing photography all these years.

It is a bit of curiosity about machines and physics. Now that I am committed to analogue photography again, I have been photographing with all formats, from 135 to 120 roll film to large-format sheet film. I enjoy learning and tinkering with cameras of all origins and formats.

In the process, I also became an amateur collector of old film cameras and early digital cameras. Last month, I even fulfilled my long-held desire to shoot on a digital back with my Hasselblad 501CM, using a 2005 Leaf Aptus 22 Kodak CCD fat-pixel sensor.

I enjoy portrait photography because it lets me push my lenses the most, especially with vintage glass. Being able to focus on the subject at minimum distance allows maximum background separation and seeing how a lens would render the background. Plus, it is more fun to work with models during my time off than with a golf cart, chairs, and pliers when I photograph for work.

Photography will forever be a learning process for me: to learn, explore, and master.

Thoughts

While I am sure that with proper maintenance, the Leica M240 will outlast us, like any electronics, the battery will die one day, and Leica will release the battery pattern, so a third-party company will continue to make replacement batteries for the camera.

I am still in the honeymoon of shooting on the digital medium format back. While I converted only shooting digital with my 501CM at the moment. Once I am more comfortable with the limit of the Aptus, my goal is to use the digital back in conjunction with film back, and leave the full-frame digital at home.

How Do You Know MrLeica?

I went into a deep dive on what rangefinder cameras I should pursue. It didn’t take me long to discover Matt on YouTube plus his MrLeica.com blog.

Aside from his vast knowledge of Leica, Matt was also a passionate model photographer like me.

From the glimpses of behind-the-scenes photoshoots I saw on YouTube, I found that our photography pacing is very similar, which convinced me to join his Patreon.

Favorite Leica Camera?

As much as I love film, my go-to Leica will always be my Leica M240. Having an intuitive digital camera lets me freely compose photos on the street without having to jump through menus. It is a camera that I wear on every trip with a 35mm lens glued to it.

I say wear because when I am traveling, I like to have my camera ready at all times, and the black paint M240 with a red-dot delete is as discreet as any other camera, especially with its small footprint.

Favorite Lens?

Lenses, damn the lenses! They render beautifully like paint brushes.

It is funny that we spent years pursuing the sharpest, most corrected lens and the fastest, most accurate autofocus system. Now we went back and looked for vintage lenses that are flawed and imperfect.

My Canon cameras and lenses are tools for my trade, while my Leicas are where I play. For my model photography, I like to paint, partially with light, just as crucial as with my lenses.

The M system offers a wide variety of compact optics. But vintage glass grabbed my attention the most.

Leica Summarit 50mm f/1.5 – Currently, my absolute favourite. The high-aperture blade counts produce beautifully rendered bokeh, even when slightly stopped down to compensate for its vintage softness. With its non-coated elements, it flares dramatically under the right light. However, I do have to be careful with its off-center sharpness, or the lack thereof.

Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm f1.4 SC II – Let’s not forget M lenses from other manufacturers. This is my favourite 35mm. It creates a similar swirl bokeh to the Summarit, especially when it is wide open at the minimum focus distance. The single-coated formulas also allow a more classic flare.

Canon 85mm f/1.9 – My most recent pick up is this post-war lens. It was the very first generation of its kind made in the 1950s, when Canon was still copying optical formulas from its Western counterpart. This was also before they had“corrected” the design in their later offerings, which I found boring.

Favorite Film?

I go through a good amount of film as I try to photograph one roll per model session. My favorite film without any doubt is FOMA 400, which I almost exclusively shoot at 200 and use box development time with Rodinal 1+50 dilution.

FOMA 400 yields a smooth skin tonal transition and just enough sharpness for portraits. However, the thin film support of FOMA causes excessive curling in 120. With my new contact glass scanning setup, scanning has become quite challenging. But until I find an alternative to 120, I will continue with my FOMA 400 workflow.

Thanks Rex! As a long time M240 owner (and now M262) I appreciate the punchier colours from this sensor versus my M10-P (or the M11). That and the fact that the battery lasts almost all day one a single charge! (I first met Rex in New York when teaching Leica workshops in 2024 and then twice more in 2025 when Rex visited Europe. Rex is a regular face on our monthly Patreon calls).

If you like the idea of larger formats, Rex also does great work with vintage medium format cameras + large format. Be sure to check out his Substack!

Why I’ll still be photographing with my old Leica M9 in 2026

🔴 Guest Post: Tobias Spranger

The best cameras already exist, and they’re over 10 years old. The Leica M9!

Old hotel, quiet portrait - Sofia #17

Who is Tobi?

Hello, my name is Tobi, and you might have seen me in one of Matt’s YouTube videos. We travel a lot together, whether it’s to the Canary Islands, Italy, the Czech Republic, England, or Poland. No trip is complete without cameras. Leicas!

I’ve been photographing since 2008, but my first camera was already in my toy chest as a child. An Agfamatic Pocket Camera. Even then, I enjoyed pretending to take pictures. In 2008, I swapped the Agfamatic for a Canon DSLR. The reason I ended up with Leica and Phase One today has a very specific explanation.

Through My Lens, Through Her Eyes - Sarah #15

My journey to Leica?

I bought my first Leica, an M9, in 2019. That camera had been floating around in my mind for much longer. The reason was my Epson R-D1, which I had since 2010, paired with two Voigtländer and one Leica lens. The camera was no longer in use, sitting on a shelf. But every time I looked at photos taken with it, I felt nostalgic. It became a pattern, and I began to research why.

The lenses! Yes, the lenses had to be the reason. So, I bought an adapter for my Canon cameras. But they were just part of the magic, and I kept searching. I studied different cameras, lenses, and sensor technologies like CCD and CMOS. And one thing kept popping up: Leica. Whether it was about shooting with a tactile feel or a nostalgically romanticized rangefinder. Even while researching CCD sensors, the M8 and M9 kept coming up. Tactile people loved the craftsmanship, visual people admired the clean design, and even audible people raved about the pleasant shutter sound. I couldn’t escape the Leica myth.

The lake and the beauty

Why Leica?

When I finally held my steel-gray Leica M9 in my hands, I wasn’t immediately in love. I was skeptical; after all, I had just paid almost €2,000 for a ten-year-old camera that didn’t even have autofocus.

But the love grew as I worked with the first RAW files. That was what I had been looking for. The images already looked much more alive without any editing, compared to what I was used to with my latest Canon cameras. And with a little RAW development in Lightroom, I was exactly where I wanted to be.

But I quickly realised that this didn’t happen with every lens. And now, with lenses from the past 80 years and from various manufacturers, I could use them all seamlessly. It opened up a whole new playground. One that I’m still exploring. I’m particularly drawn to lenses from the 50s and 60s, which are only partially coated and not optically perfect. They work beautifully with the already high-contrast Leica M9 sensor, resulting in stunning colours and contrasts.

In the Garden of Secrets - Kristyna #12

What Do You Photograph and Why?

I primarily photograph models, from portraits to nudes and body-painting. I love to travel and discover new places. Through body-painting, I’ve become part of a global network of artists and models. I’m often invited to events and jams. It’s perfect for me — artists and models are already on site, which often gives me the opportunity to stay an extra day or two and photograph my own projects.

When there’s no bodypainting event, I often travel with Matt and Thomas. We book an Airbnb, find some models, and have a great, creative time together.

A whisper between waves and wind, only the ocean remembers - Island #3

Thoughts

When we travel, I usually have a Leica M9 and a set of lenses with me. However, I love to think outside the box and try new or old things. Since 2008, I’ve witnessed the majority of the digital photographic developments. Even though cameras from 15 years ago couldn’t compete with what we have today on paper, they were still more than sufficient for over 80% of my shots. And I’ve realized that the remaining 20%—the extreme shooting situations—rarely produce results good enough to show.

In short, I believe that the technological progress in camera technology over the last 15 years hasn’t enabled me to take better photos. Maybe it made it easier, but certainly not better.

I claim that the best cameras were made between 2008 and 2012. It might sound crazy or nostalgically romantic, but give me a few lines to explain.

Since 2010, I’ve always had the best Canon cameras, and around 2016/2017, I realised something was missing. I didn’t know exactly what at the time, and I still don’t know for sure today. But I have a feeling. I’ve already talked about my journey back to the M9 with a CCD sensor. In 2020, I bought a Phase One IQ180, also with a CCD sensor. Since then, I’ve done some crazy things, including scraping the RGB layers off an M9 sensor to make it monochrome. If you’re interested, check out Matt’s video on my “Chopstick M9” or visit my Substack, where I’ve posted more detailed articles about it.

Over time, photographers have approached me, asking if I would compare their camera with the M9. And no matter the brand, the older the camera, the closer the results were to the M9. We’ve tested this with the Leica M10 and M240, and I even tried it with old Canon DSLRs. The RAW files from the old CMOS sensors, under good conditions, result in a very similar look to the CCD sensors of that time. So, is it really the sensor technology that makes the real difference, or is it the shift towards higher ISOs and dynamic range that causes colors to fade and colour fidelity to decline?

I can’t shake it, and I’ll continue testing older cameras and sharing my findings on Substack and Flickr.

A Summer That Smelled Like Roses - Adele #20

How Do You Know MrLeica?

I discovered Matt through his MrLeica.com blog when I was searching for information on the M9 and compatible lenses. This was before Matt started his YouTube channel in 2019. At first, I was only interested in the technical details, but I soon became captivated by his travels, especially the way he traveled.

I looked at his model photos from Budapest, Gdansk, and Uzhgorod and got stuck on his colour shots with Kodak Vision3 film. It took a few more years before, in 2023, we teamed up and created a three-day bodypainting jam in Italy. I think Patreon existed by then, and I asked Matt if he would come to Italy.

Why and how he agreed spontaneously remains a mystery to me. Initially, he was quite overwhelmed by the colorful and in-your-face world of bodypainting. But I believe that the strong teamwork and the relaxed atmosphere between shoots eventually won him over. Anyway, I met Matt for the first time at the airport in Ancona, Italy. Since then, we’ve traveled to multiple countries together and photographed many beautiful models.

Favorite Leica Camera?

Guess what? It’s the Leica M9. I think that’s no surprise. I came to the M9 because of the CCD sensor, and that’s why I’m staying. Even though the newer Leicas always lure me in, and I can never keep my hands still without testing them, I always return to the M9.

Over the years, I’ve learned to deal with the camera’s shortcomings. Yes, the M9 needs a break after seven shots to clear the buffer, and that models often look at me confused when I show them the photos on the tiny display, which doesn’t even deserve its name, but I can live with that. There are many other things that annoy me, but I think it’s like a marriage—you learn to live with the quirks.

No matter how hard I try with another camera, my photos don’t get better, so I’ll just stick with my M9.

Favorite Lens?

Okay, this could quickly spiral into unforeseen dimensions, so I’ll keep it brief and start with my absolute favourite lens and name two others in different focal lengths.

75mm f1.5 Carl Zeiss Biotar – This is my absolute favourite lens. I love it for portraits. It’s often described as having swirly bokeh, but its character changes depending on the distance to the model and the background. That’s what makes it so valuable to me. (Before I found the very rare Contax RF version of the Biotar, I shot with an Exakta-mount 75mm Biotar that I converted to Leica M mount to use on the M9. It taught me the lens’s language and that’s probably why I kept searching for one of the rare Contax versions – only 225 ever made).

50mm f1.4 Carl Zeiss Biotar – A lens originally made for Pentaflex AK16 film cameras. I’ve adapted one to Leica M with rangefinder coupling like I did with the first 75mm Biotar. The 50mm Biotar is my watercolour paint brush when it comes to fast 50s.

35mm f1.4 Similar Artralab – A hidden gem that I only discovered a year ago. A compact 35mm f1.4 lens in the classic design that doesn’t suffer from field curvature. This makes it possible to compose off-centre in model photography without the centre of the image being significantly sharper than the edges. The bokeh is fine and unobtrusive.

Favorite Film?

This is a bit tricky for me, and I’m definitely not the right person to give tips and tricks on film photography. Although I’ve shot film on and off for the past few years, I don’t have a true favorite when it comes to film.

This is mostly because I’m always disappointed when I scan the analogue negatives myself or receive the scans back from the lab. I can never get a consistent look. Different lab, different colors. Different scanner, different colors. Different software, different colors.

It’s gotten to the point where I’ve questioned the “magical film look.” I’ve seen Portra 400 ruined so badly that it could have been a cross-processed Lomo 800.

Anyway, if you hand me a nice analogue Leica with a characteristic lens, please load up some Kodak Vision3 250D. That makes me happy—thanks to Sunbath Lab in Paris!

Exploring AI as an Amateur Photographer

🔴 Guest Post: Sundeep Kheterpal

Moving into the Leica system has reignited my passion for photography, from choosing gear to planning shoots and exploring creativity. I now work backwards from a vision of the shoot to the gear and planning, rather than starting with equipment.

My early adopter mindset has allowed me to merge AI experimentation with a growing artistic eye, producing images close to those I would create in real shoots. Here I share my passion for Leica and my finding from experimenting with AI for portraits.

Who is Sundeep?

My name is Sundeep Kheterpal, a hobbyist photographer living and working in Berkshire. I am humbled to be invited to write a guest blog. Hobbyist is probably the best description for my photography journey – I am not hugely expert or knowledgeable in any specific field. I don’t really look back to vintage gear but I do, however, always like to try new technology and ideas.

L1005288-2

My journey to Leica

My first camera was a Kodak Instamatic 126 at age of eight. As a teenager, I borrowed my father’s Mamiya SLR and learned darkroom techniques at school. In my 20’s I moved to a Canon EOS650, which then sat in storage for three decades—until I recently dusted it off and found it still works perfectly!

I have accumulated various digital cameras over 20 years for work and family moving through to Fujifilm APS-C bodies. After several iterations, I landed on the X-Pro3, which sparked my interest in rangefinders and then on to Leica. Over the past few years I have picked up the SL2-S, CL, M11-P, and this summer the MP.

The Leica SL2-S autofocus has never really impressed me, even trying out the SL3, so I branched to the Lumix S1RII—much lighter than the SL setup and a joy to use with heavier L mount glass. The Lumix S and S Pro lenses are an outstanding package for value, sufficiently sharp, colour rendition, portability and fast autofocus (I agree with Matt – better with a mist filter added for portraits!)

With the Leica CL and SL2-S, I have started to appreciate the real differences between cameras and lenses, to a degree that I had not done before. I have gone through a whole gamut of gear but am now slowing down to decide what I want to do, and not what I think I should be doing according to reviews and articles.

I have also revived my Canon EOS system, using EF lenses on my SL2-S and S1Rii with a Sigma EF–L mount adapter. The EF 85mm f/1.4 L IS USM has become one of my favourites.

I am learning to experiment not only with older lenses but happy to try the new generations of replicas and also to adapt other lens mounts.  This reflects my nature to move forward with technology but now learning to use it to create images with my own vision, rather than someone else’s creative vision (or no vision!). With this angle, I still look forward and try any new opportunities which is how and why I have dabbled with AI in the last year or so.

L1005160

Why Leica?

My initial draw to Leica came through the Fujifilm X-Pro3, with its rangefinder-inspired form factor. I loved the ability to see the world as it is and slow down the capture process. But what keeps me here?

There’s something unique about Leica M cameras—the construction, the feel, even the sound of the shutter. That is hard to replicate elsewhere. For film, that tactile pleasure is reason enough. For digital, the question is trickier: why Leica over other brands?

As I get older, an EVF has become indispensable. Framing, exposure, reviewing images—it’s simply more practical than external viewfinders like the Visoflex. And yet, I keep coming back to the SL2-S. On paper, the Lumix S1R II beats it: faster, lighter, cheaper, higher resolution, and compatible with the same lenses. But the Leica sensor has a subtle glow, a gentler rendering compared to the Lumix.

With landscapes or street photography, the difference may be minimal if you’re using the same lenses. But with portraits, Leica images have a lush quality—regardless of the lens. Could other systems replicate that? Probably. But not with the same breadth and history of M lenses. Using M glass on my Lumix just does not deliver the same result.

And then there is  the community. The enthusiasm, support, and camaraderie I’ve experienced in the Leica world feels unmatched. Whether meeting other users or stepping into a Leica store, there is  a shared outlook and connection that makes the system more than just gear.

L1005127

What do I photograph?

I have  always photographed a bit of everything—street, landscapes, travel, family, friends. I was the one with the camera at weddings, school sports matches, and later my kids’ activities. Portraits came later, starting with workshops I attended with my daughter before COVID.

During and after the pandemic, I practiced headshots and group photos at work, but I always felt something was missing. My first workshop with Matt changed that—it gave me the confidence to believe I could produce images with genuine creative output.

With limited travel time, portrait photography has become my main creative outlet over the past two years. It’s opened up a side of me I didn’t know existed. I’ve never considered myself artistic; I’ve always been structured, scientific, process-driven. That’s how I approached portraits at first—methodically, not spontaneously.

But in recent months, something’s shifted. With my basic methods in place, I’ve started shooting more freely. What feels spontaneous to me is probably just the culmination of training and experience—but it doesn’t matter. It feels spontaneous, it feels creative, and that’s what counts. Shooting portraits and undertaking model photography has become a new most enjoyable pastime, with new people, new processes and a new journey.

Thoughts (about Ai)

The rapid progress of AI is astounding. Within 12 months basic editing has become full capability in creations and revision.  Some of you reading this will be regular users of AI but I thought it would be worthwhile sharing my journey and experiments to encourage others to explore AI and form a view of your own, if not already.

AI for Travel and Photography Itinerary Planning

I have used ChatGPT and Perplexity AI to draft photography focused itineraries for travel and family holidays. It is surprisingly easy to ask for a three-day photography plan with locations, shooting times, lighting conditions, and suggested equipment. AI can even adjust the schedule to fit specific requirements. On top of that, it will recommend restaurants, the best
times to visit, and ways to avoid crowds. Honestly, it is far easier than ploughing through brochures, websites, or endless YouTube videos when going to a new travel destination. Highly recommended!

AI for Comparing Cameras and Lenses

Can you compare cameras and lenses with AI? Well, yes, you can. ChatGPT, for example, learns from your searches and preferences, tailoring its suggestions to your photography style. That said, in 2025, AI reviews still lack the depth of an experienced photographer’s perspective. A seasoned shooter who understands your approach can provide insights that AI summaries simply cannot replicate.

AI reviews of lenses or cameras will give you an average or summary of the most popular reviews but the problem with that is that the sources it uses may not be particularly valid. Many YouTubers give opinions, and there will be opinions in chat groups or magazine articles, but these may not be experienced enough to gather the nuances for the equipment or style you want.

What you may be better doing is just getting a pros and cons list or a choice of recommendations that you can start with. However, that still may or may not give you what is best for you.

P1013035

Can AI Replace Portrait Photography?

This is where the AI debate heats up. With tools like Google’s “Nano Banana” (and others), AI’s ability to manipulate portraits has advanced dramatically. It has become easy to remove people from backgrounds, adjust clothing, reshape faces, change complexions, or even replace entire backgrounds.

Photographers have been retouching portraits the darkroom days—cleaning up
complexions, whitening teeth, and helping subjects look their best. Adobe Photoshop and Evoto Ai have good options for complexions. That is part of the craft – in fact professionals are required to produce work that makes people look good.

However, the question now is: how far should we go? Is it acceptable to take an old image, change the clothing, or change the background and present it as a new portrait? It may be so if it is for yourself or a client to re-create something for another format or another ‘look’.

These practices could reduce the income of professional portrait photographers, especially if AI can generate magazine cover-ready images without a studio or a photographer.

Simple editing with Lightroom CC and Generative heal such as removing people and hair fill with generative AI. Watch out for reflections when removing people and remember you can regenerate smaller sections of previously larger generated areas. The retouching works well in the standard platforms. Each stage still requires a specific instruction.

What if there was a platform that undertook the revisions you need with just one single written sentence or prompt? Well that is happening now as well with platforms such as Google Pixshop.

The Value of Real Photography

I am not a philosopher, but I have been reflecting on why these AI generated images matter. For work, I have created an AI images of people performing tasks using use Adobe Firefly and Google Nano Banana. It takes less than five minutes, saved money, and works perfectly well enough for marketing and teaching.

On the other hand, I also recently created black and white style portrait in ten minutes (example below). The portrait at the start of this article was also created in the same way using Google Nano Banana. This was watermarked, but removing the watermark was trivial. The speed and accessibility are astonishing.

Generated Image November 30, 2025 - 11_11PM
Created with AI

It looks good, and if my only goal was to get ‘likes’ on YouTube, it might have been enough. As hobbyists, however, we know photography is more than quick results. It is about the process: building up gear, learning skills, traveling, meeting people, making mistakes, developing both analogue and digital images, and refining our craft. That journey is where the passion lies.

Portraits that I have shot recently (in real life) essentially took me nearly two years of practice, training, and experimentation with equipment. The satisfaction of creating it far outweighed any AI shortcut. Interestingly though, as someone without an artistic or creative background, I could not have directed AI to produce the image above without the knowledge and creative ideas that I have gained through my recent experience.

The Creative Difference

So, what separates an AI image from a real one? It is the same difference between a masterpiece painted by a great artist and a copy made by his or her student. The genius lies in the creativity—the mysterious quality of the human hand and mind. AI is utilising and drawing upon existing materials but until AI learns to create a new essence that is valued and appreciated by its human audience, real creation will always stand apart.

AI is changing photography, but it does not replace the passion, skill, and satisfaction of creating images yourself. For hobbyists, AI is best seen as a companion tool—something that helps with planning, editing, and experimenting, while leaving the true artistry to you as the creator. The joy of
photography lies in the journey: learning, experimenting, and capturing moments that reflect your vision. AI may speed up the process, but it cannot replace the heart behind the lens.

The choice of process remains yours whether it be analogue, digital, or AI; whether you create your vision in person with equipment and people and locations or whether solely at your computer. Are you happy with the product? Are your clients happy? Are you honest in your journey? What gives you satisfaction? Do you need millions of viewers for income or the satisfaction of an outcome from a leaning journey (or both?).

The vision, the choice of process and the satisfaction achieved from whatever you want and need from the outcome remains yours.

Favourite Leica camera?

My favourite everyday camera I think has to be the Leica CL. It is just such a stress-free every day carry. A great sensor for portraits.

Yes it’s not 60MP (only 24MP), yes it’s not rangefinder, yes high ISO is quite grainy and yes the video is not great, but at £1000-£1500 it’s such an easy camera to use, to travel with and shoot both manual focus and autofocus.

I have the digital Leica M11-P and film Leica MP but I’m still the learning curve with these so for me, I would reserve them for when I take time out and spend some time specifically on a shoot. The effort and satisfaction in using them is certainly there but the Leica CL is just so easy and useful. (The Leica SL2-S is a joy but heavier to travel with).

Better photos with a rangefinder

First, a few words about myself: I was born in 1972 and started taking photographs when I was 13 or 14 years old. My father had a Zeiss Ikon Icarex 35 S with a Zeiss Tessar 50/2.8 lens. The camera already had an internal light meter that worked with the working aperture; everything else was completely manual and mechanical. At that time, I often photographed slide film, which forced me to be very precise with the exposure, because slide film didn’t allow for much leeway. The Icarex slowed things down considerably, and you simply had to take your time, otherwise the results were rather poor. The learning curve was quite steep with the purely manual camera, as you had to figure out how aperture, shutter speed and film speed worked together and what pitfalls the rather simple light meter had.

From today’s perspective, the light meter was more of a rough guide, and you were forced to make the appropriate corrections based on the subject, light and experience. After Icarex, I moved on to Canon and their A and T series, then to the EOS-1, until I also went digital. At first, I still took photos with digital EOS cameras, as I had a few EF lenses from my EOS-1, and then later I switched to Nikon and their F-mount.

I have never photographed with analogue Nikons, only digital ones so far. But that was also the time when I had already started to focus more on portrait photography and to use only a few fixed focal lengths for this purpose. This was accompanied by a switch to black-and-white photography, which has stayed with me to this day, and I have not photographed in colour since.

My journey to Leica

My first contact with Leica cameras was through the Leica Academy, which was still housed in the Altenberg monastery at the time, and Leica itself was still based in Solms and not yet in Wetzlar. That was where I first photographed with an R8 and Leica lenses. As the opportunity arose ‘by chance’, I tried out a classic M6 TTL with a 35 mm Summicron and was not at all impressed. It all felt somehow ‘wrong’ to me, probably because I had only ever photographed with an SLR before.

Even today, I can’t explain exactly why I bought an M7 with a 50mm Summicron as my first Leica in the early 2000s. That’s how I got started with M photography, naturally with a 50 mm lens, because I simply love using that focal length. You have to be willing to get involved with M photography, like fixed focal lengths and not see the limitations as such, but rather see them as an opportunity to do something different with them.

Since I was very familiar with 50mm, I was able to concentrate completely on photographing with an M. My focal lengths today are the same as they were back then: 28, 50 and 75 mm. Whether analogue on film or later digital, for me an M is always the rangefinder with all its advantages and disadvantages.

I’m not so sure about the current EV1. It also has an M on it, but at the moment the question doesn’t arise for me. More on that later.

Why Leica?

For me, the most important feature of a Leica M is the rangefinder, because with it, from 35 mm and longer, you always see more than you photograph. You always see the whole picture, whether consciously or unconsciously, which allows you to perfectly adjust your own framing right up to the moment you press the shutter release thanks to the bright line frame. You frame your own picture with the camera, so to speak, during the process of taking the photograph. That’s what photography with an M means to me.

This possibility alone has influenced me to question my framing, and with an M this works perfectly, because you simply see more and can make new decisions much more quickly that can significantly improve the image, or you see completely new things, a whole new perspective, which is much more difficult with an SLR viewfinder, because here you only see what is in the frame.

This constant training of my own eye has contributed so much to how I photograph today. Even though one or two themes in my photography have changed, I have always enjoyed taking portraits and that has not changed to this day.

What do I photograph?

If I had to describe what I photograph today, the following comes very close: Women from portrait to sensual nude exclusively in black and white, photography reduced to the essentials, because less is more; less technology and image editing, preferably available light, no distracting colours, genuine, honest portraits and aesthetic sensual nude photos with sophistication and clear visual language. As a counterpoint to this, I photograph landscapes, architecture and street scenes to clear my head for portrait photography.

I like this reduction. I usually travel with a camera or a lens, always in black and white, and for several years now, I have preferred to use the JPG directly from the camera. However, this is not a dogma for me; if the situation requires it, I fall back on DNG. My aim, however, is to photograph a finished image directly and save myself any time in post-production.

One might think that an M would be particularly suitable for this reduction, but I haven’t photographed with an M for a few years now, for several reasons. As a glasses wearer, 28mm on an M isn’t really good for photography, and on top of that, I’ve been very fond of shooting with fast 50mm lenses for quite some time. Taking portraits with such a wide aperture using a rangefinder, with the model and photographer constantly moving slightly, results in a very high number of rejects. That’s why the Leica SL2-S with M/L adapter and the Leica Q2 have completely replaced my M photography but not my M lenses.

With a Leica Q camera you get a bit of that M feeling, at least because of the similar size and the viewfinder in the right place. With age, my eyesight isn’t getting any better, and at f1.2, the Leica SL2-S’s viewfinder is really very pleasant when focusing M lenses, and I have significantly fewer rejects in my portraits in terms of sharpness at the desired point.

The fact that I no longer photograph with an M also has to do with the fact that today I can see my framing in advance and know it even before I look through the viewfinder. I have become increasingly aware of this in recent years as I have switched back and forth between different cameras.

Thoughts

Looking back, it was very important for my photographic development to take photographs with the M and the rangefinder. I learned a lot from it, and even though I no longer take photographs with the M, I wouldn’t want to have missed that time and, looking back, I’m glad I chose the M7 and everything that followed.

Even though I no longer take photographs with a Leica M myself, I still have a keen interest in it, particularly in lenses with an M bayonet mount, although these do not necessarily have to be new.

How do you know MrLeica?

I have been following Matt’s channel for a long time because I personally like his mix of new and old lenses and cameras, model photography and useful add-ons.

When Matt opened his Patreon channel, I was happy to join. I no longer shoot analogue or with an M, but I still enjoy our bi-monthly group Zoom calls, even when the topics are specifically about that. I enjoy interacting with everyone else, seeing the work others put into photography and seeing the images that result from it. It’s just fun to share the topic of photography with others, where it’s not about being better or getting more clicks and likes, but about enjoying beautiful images and exchanging new ideas.

leica reviews

Favourite Leica camera?

The Leica M9 was my absolute favourite camera back then, even though it had many weaknesses; the look of the images from an M9 was simply brilliant. Today, it’s the Leica SL2-S with M/L adapter and the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f1.2 for portraits plus the Leica Q2 because it’s so versatile.

lens reviews

Favourite lens?

My favourite focal length is still 50 mm. With the Leica M7 and M9, it was the Leica Summicron 50mm f2 and sometimes the Leica Summicron 28mm f2. With the SL2-S, things have changed a bit. It’s still a 50, but now it’s the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f1.2 and, rather rarely, the Leica Summarit 75mm f2.5.

film stock reviews

Favourite film?

When it comes to film, I have only used two Ilford films recently, Pan F and HP5. This had the advantage for me that I knew how the films reacted in certain situations, so I didn’t switch to other films.

Last month

September saw me post the least videos since I started YouTube in 2019. When I had a 9-5 job (plus commute = 7-7 job), I had very limited time for photography. Since going full time with YouTube and quitting my Finance career a few years back I thought I’d have endless time. Sadly not.

For multiple years I was putting out two new YouTube videos each week. More recently, I tried to get fancier with the footage so videos took twice as long to make (same number of views and likes). That pretty much used up all my time each week which resulted in 3-6 months without developing any film.

By September, I was desperate to start developing my film again so I “used up” my available time processing some of my film pile. (I even managed a few hours in my converted bathroom to print a few images in the darkroom!) As a result video dropped to one per week. This might be the norm in the near term until I can catch up with everything.

Leica SL2-S presets

Finally I’ve made my Leica SL2-S preset pack for Lightroom available to download. Rather than 3 presets + 1 free this pack is bigger with 5 presets + 2 presets free. I use these presets to edit all my colour and black and white images from my Leica SL2-S camera. I’ve even been enjoying the presets applied to my Leica M10-P RAW files and Leica SL 601 RAW files. I hope you like them too and find a list of MrLeica presets here.

Photo books and prints

I’ve found a UK print company that looks promising so I’m hoping to make a photobook or zine available before Christmas 2025. I’m just waiting to receive paper samples so I can decide what my work best for my B&W images and then I can start to put the book together.

I’ve also started printing in the darkroom again after a break so look out for some examples in YouTube videos to follow. If you’re interested in my books or prints please add your preferences here –

Portfolio shoot 2 – Czech Republic

This was my third visit to the Czech Republic in recent months. I asked Patreon Tobi if he wanted to go back to the forest cabin for more model shoots so we did that. See the location in the TTArtisan 75mm f2 lens YouTube video.

The plan was Tobi would drive from Germany and pick me up (plus bring the lighting gear). We’d do a 10K run each morning, I’d cook breakfast, then models arrive. Two full days of shoots then day three we head to Prague before I flew home. See the BTS videos on Patreon.

My goal was to test with digital and shoot the proper images on film (120 and 35mm). Plan is to then print some of the negatives in the darkroom. Here are a few samples –

London workshops

Patreon Rich flew in from Chicago for a workshop with Hannah so we booked a studio in London. The first photo below was my most liked photo of the month on Flickr, shot with his beautiful Leica Noctilux 75mm f1.25 lens. Peter (now also a Patreon) joined me in London for a full day and we shot with Nicola in the afternoon.

Poland Workshop

Sundeep asked if he could join me in Gdansk, Poland in September so it was great to be teaching in Poland again. Gdansk is perfect for pure Leica workshops where we walk around the city master our Leica cameras (normally M cameras for this), and for model shoots.

As Sundeep was more interested in how I organise my Polish model shoots I arranged two models, Veronika and Amelia as part of our full day workshop. See a few sample photos below and download my free eBook to see how I find models.

Leica MP film photos

Sundeep was shooting along side me so it was fascinating to see how his film images looked. I’ll do a full post for Patreon but here are a few samples. We both used Leica M film cameras (I used my Leica M7, Sundeep had his Leica MP). I developed and scanned my own film, Sundeep got his film lab processed. We did use different lenses and I share two of his sharpest negatives (with Kodak T-Max 400). Well done Sundeep!

How is it September already? For August I was in Brighton and Prague creating YouTube content. (Thankfully the weather was mostly dry and sunny which always helps!) Multiple Leica photographers emailed me to schedule a day together in London (a mix of Leica and models) and the rest of the month I was likely testing lenses or making videos.

Leica SL2-S presets

I did promise that my new Leica SL2-S preset pack for Lightroom would be out in August. Sorry, I’ve been struggling to shortlist 5 favourites from the many I’ve developed so it might end up being a 6-pack. Patreon friend Tobi flew to the UK and we met in Brighton for a few days of sea, sun and photos. We didn’t book any models so instead did the usual tourist style street photography. You might have seen me interview Tobi for the Leica M9 chopstick video!

In addition to testing lenses for YouTube you’ll see me trying out another product on my Leica camera in the next video. Brighton is a fantastic place for photos if you’ve never been. I really should visit more often, even if just for the run along the coastline in the mornings!

July kicked off with a European road trip with Patreons, Tobi and Thomas. Our first destination was Leica Wetzlar (see video), then multi-day photoshoots in the Czech Republic and finishing in Prague before flying home. During the month I was then trying to get the YouTube videos posted from the lenses I tested on the trip. The last week of July I had an annual family getaway, this year to Wales so I packed a pile of lenses to test.

If you missed it, I developed a Leica SL2 preset pack when I owned that camera. When I then changed to the Leica SL2-S it was time to develop new presets. Leica Wetzlar Photoshoot

If you are a regular reader you might remember my trip to Wetzlar last year. We accidentally bumped into Kim and did a few photos. This time I wrote to Kim and asked if she’d like to arrange a car shoot again during our brief visit. You might have seen these already but here are a few samples. See the road trip YouTube video for lots more photos.

Czech Republic photoshoots

If you photograph models like me, you may often get nice photos but sometimes everything just clicks and you capture some real favourites. I kept my camera setup really simple by using just one autofocus lens for all images. If you read the last blog post you’ll know that lens was the TTArtisan 75mm f2.  See the video or check out the full blog post that covers autofocus portrait lenses for L mount cameras. Here are a few of my favourites from the mentioned video/ blog.

Model photography eBooks

If model photography is always something you’ve wanted to try but you just don’t know where to start check out my eBooks. The Model Photography Handbook is the book I wish I had when I was starting out. It answers all your common questions (I collected 1000s of questions from you guys for over 12 months while writing the book) and provides an easy to follow step-by-step framework to follow.

Leica workshops

Most of my Leica workshops are in London but I have been doing more teaching in Europe this year too.  Get in touchif you want to meet me in London, Budapest or Gdansk. (I’m teaching in Poland in September and probably October too as photographers reached out to me).

I seem to be known as that guy that flies to Eastern Europe to photograph the local beauties after doing so regularly for over a decade. If you’d like to learn how you can do the same, join me! (For workshops I arrange our models, the studios if required and can help you with finding your accommodation).

Remote tuition via Zoom

My Zoom calls are like the face to face workshops that I teach in London. Some weeks are really busy then others are quieter. Recently I’ve had quite a few overseas photographers reach out requesting a Zoom call. Often I’m guiding photographers when they are buying a new camera or lens, or helping them learn how to master their latest camera.

If you need help feel free to get in touch and check out some of the Zoom testimonials.

Coming up next month..

Coming up in August, I’ve arranged a 2-day shoot in Prague with a model I met on my last visit to the Czech Republic. The plan is to shoot more film and hopefully capture some portfolio-worthy images (to go in a photo book at some stage).  Patreon Tobi (see Tobi’s Substack) is also visiting me from Germany so we’re heading to Brighton to shoot some content for YouTube.

As I was away with family for the last week of July, I used the UK getaway as an excuse to test lots of lenses. Like all my trips, now I’m back I need to lock myself away to go through the footage and photos so I can make the YouTube videos.

YouTube video – spotlight

Talking of videos, coming up in August are YouTube videos for the new Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 28mm f2 VM and Brightin Star 28mm f2.8 (plus a few other videos I’ve been working on).

Last month

All change for my camera line-up. I sold the recently bought mint Leica SL2 and got a nearly new Leica SL2-S instead. It was time to say goodbye to my Leica Q and I step outside the Leica bubble to buy my new B camera, a Lumix S9. We’ll get onto that plus I fly to Budapest to teach another 1:1 Leica workshop and head north to complete my 2-day charity bike ride.

Leica SL2 > SL2-S

After being very excited and settling on the Leica SL2 (see the Leica SL2 vs SL2-S blog post) I soon regretted having excessive megapixels when I crop in camera and shoot models. A combination of the SL2 being more than I needed plus knowing I could swap to a newer camera AND get a good chunk of money back to put towards something else sat heavy on my shoulders. I listed my SL2 on eBay and it soon sold and I was lucky to find a clean copy SL2-S from a Patreon friend/ workshop student.

Bye Bye Leica SL2

My new B cam – Lumix S9

I’m not new to Lumix. My first camera was a point and shoot Lumix TZ20? My first interchangeable lens camera was a Lumix G1 (one of the very first micro four thirds cameras). Years later I discovered Leica after a period with Nikon and then I went back to Lumix when I got the Lumix S5 (see that Leica vs Lumix article).

It was that time again where Lumix cameras offered me featured that I could get from Leica (mostly for video). I’ll do a full blog post write up but in brief I got a Lumix S9 instead of the Lumix S5IIX because of the small size and small price tag. (See on YouTube). These cameras are an absolute bargain on MPB and compact for my travel.

Lumix S9

Bye-bye Leica Q

After buying a Leica Q camera for wedding photography jobs some years ago I finally sold it. My Q has been gathering dust for 2-3 years since I quit weddings and now I focus on teaching photography workshops. The Q is a great fixed lens point and shoot camera but I love experimenting with interesting lenses so it’s not a great fit for me. Featured in this YouTube video.

Charity bike ride

After a year of planning and months of training (on and off) it was time to drive north to complete the coast to coast 2-day bike ride with friends to raise money for charity. 8 riders, 1 driver and a support vehicle. 150 miles on day 1 and 120 miles on day 2 across England. Mentioned in this YouTube video and see full highlights video on Patreon (free).

After being featured on the Macfilos website the article was shared again in their Top 5 article (and with my photo as the cover image).

Leica workshops

Most of my Leica workshops are in London but after the success of my recent workshop in Budapest I flew out to Hungary again to teach a US model photographer/ Leica user. While I was there I also taught a photographer from the Netherlands.  Get in touch if you want to meet me in London, Budapest or Gdansk. I arrange our models, the studios if required and can help you with finding your accommodation.

Lots of new gear reviews to come as I’m testing various kit behind the scenes. A few people sent me questions about what video rig I’m now using as lots has changed recently. I’ll do a full breakdown video for that in July (in addition to the usual lens reviews etc).

Looking forward to the 2025 European road trip with Patreon friends in July so you’ll likely see some of that in YouTube videos soon. (If you’re interested to hear what it’s like travelling with me check out Tobi’s Substack as we often travel together).

May has come and gone in a blink. It’s great to finally get some sunny weather for location shoots and longer days are always more productive. I’d booked a trip to Poland but after a busy 3 days in London for our annual Patreon meet-up I cancelled the trip as I had too much to do. No travel in May but lots of workshops (and I bought myself a Leica SL2!)

Finally upgrading my Leica SL > SL2

If you’ve followed my journey you might remember my Leica vs Lumix article. I started out with a Lumix S5 (as a cost saving option) but then realised it just wasn’t a Leica so bought the Leica SL. That was 4 years ago. For 2025 I thought it would be great to get one camera that I enjoyed using that can do both photos and video. At the current silly low prices (for Leica*) these cameras are just too good to say no to. My Leica SL2 vs SL2-S post covers my reasons for getting the SL2 rather than the SL2-S but both are great cameras.

Leica workshops

Now the weather is improving in the UK it’s getting busier again. I ran multiple 1:1 Leica workshops in London, both general photography and model photography days. Next month I’m back in Budapest to teach again following the success of my last visit.  Get in touch if you want to meet me in London, Budapest or Gdansk.

When photographers fly in from the US (and other countries) to meet me they often want to explore London. Despite most of my personal work being model photography I do teach general photography and street photography too. These photos are from workshops in May –

Photography theory over coffee

One student flew in from Italy and wanted to quiz me over a coffee. The topics we covered were some of the camera basics when working with lighting and then looking at a specific situation and how to light the space. I guess it was more like being hired as a lighting expert/ consultant ahead of their paid gig. I LOVE lighting so if you are struggling get in touch!

Patreon meet in London

This was our third year attending PhotoLondon so it’s become an excuse for our annual Patreon get together. Some of the guys can be seen in the photos below and others joined us later and managed to escape the camera. I invited model friend Sofia to join us and to my amazement she said yes! Thanks Sofi for modelling for us and putting up with all the camera chat.  (Read some of the Patreon testimonials and you can find Sofi on my Instagram feed).

Patreon meet in Toulouse

After setting up my Patreon account in 2021 we have grown to  almost 1000 members. Many are silent supporters and free members but we do have a very active core group that meet twice a month on our group Zoom calls. Of those, six of us met up in Toulouse France for a creative weekend. (Read some of the Patreon testimonials).

Arno kindly hosted us and it was me, Tobi (Germany), Thomas (The Netherlands), Rex (US), and Grom (France). Arno arranged 10 models/ actors for us on both days and we tried to give them all photos. We even recruited an extra photographer, Peter, that we met in the street by accident. An extremely enjoyable few days and we do it again in May in London for our annual meet. If you’re going to PhotoLondon we’ll be there. Stop and say hi if you see us!

Teaching in Budapest (Photoshoots)

For April, I flew to one of my favourite cities, Budapest. Daniel reached out and said if I was coming to Central Europe let him know as he’d like to book me for a day. This was my first workshop in Budapest despite being a regular visitor for model photoshoots.

I helped Daniel find an apartment and I booked Edina as our model (a friend for over 6 years who happened to be in town between overseas modelling gigs). I might write an eBook about travel to share tips on finding apartments, favourite cities to visit, costs involved, camera gear and tying that back to my existing model photography eBook.

If you like the idea of joining me in Budapest get in touch and I can try to fit you in on my next visit.  Daniel got the fast train from Vienna to Budapest to meet me and said it was really easy.  Currently I’m offering Budapest workshops for the same price as my London full day workshops but dates will be limited and I can’t accept last minute requests.
